Journalist and political scientist Harold Isaacs wrote a post World War II work, No Peace for Asia (1947). In that he wrote of French oppression and Vietnamese nationalism and resistance.
Edgar Snow believed that peace was possible if the French agreed to independence and self government to Indo-China, including "social and economic development. . . . moderate and conservative Annamites both told me that all but a minority of extremists would probably lay down their arms" under such circumstances. The Annamites want to be treated as the Philippines. Eastern European countries which sided with the Axis are allowed to govern themselves but the anti-Fascist Vietnamese are not. "This is one of the reasons why some out here keep saying that America ended the war with greater prestige than any nation in history - and is losing it more rapidly than any nation in history." (Saturday Evening Post 1950)
Sound familiar. It is the same as after 9/11. The world sided with the U.S. But after our invasions and slaughter in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as legalized kidnapping and assassinations we squandered any and all sympathy we had.
